Narratological interest

My first book, entitled, Surprised by Shame: Dostoevsky's Liars and Narrative Exposure, demonstrated the way that Dostoevsky uses shame to collapse the distance between readers and characters. My current project is on 20th century underground narratives, i.e., narratives that have been influenced by the first-person narrative strategy of Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground. I have been a member of the Society for the Study of Narrative Literature since 1995; I am currently President of the International Dostoevsky Society.
